La mayoria de los vestigios historicos se hallan en la parte sur de la isla. Macasar (Ujung Pandang): Antiguo fuerte (»Benteng») que alberga un museo etnográfico interesante; tumbade Diponegoro, príncipe javanés muerto en el exilio; los tres templos chinos, en los alrededores, el puerto con los veleros; las tumbas de los príncipes de Goa. En la ruta del país Toroja: Dos etapas agradables, Bantimuru (cascadas, multitud de mariposas) y Pare-Pare, al fondo de una bahía frecuentada por barcos que aseguran el cabotaje. País Toraja: Tres pueblos son especialmente interesantes, lemo (maniquíes en los nichos del acantilado), Londa (sepulturas subterráneas) y Suaya (sarcófagos polícromos). Para quienes pueden ir hasta Menado, en la punta norte de la isla la excursión al lago Tondano, permite descubrir un aspecto muy diferente de Célebes.
